This offseason, the Florida Gators are gearing up to defend their men’s basketball national championship with renewed vigor and ambition. As they look to navigate the challenges of repeating their success, Todd Golden and his talented squad are confidently set to enter the 2025-26 season ranked among the top 25 programs in the nation.

According to ESPN’s basketball recruiting expert Jeff Borzello, the Gators have climbed to 18th place in his latest early top 25 rankings for the upcoming season. This marks a rise of one spot since the last update, placing Florida just behind the 17th-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini and ahead of the 19th-ranked Creighton Bluejays.

The Southeastern Conference is also well represented, with six schools making the cut, and the Arkansas Razorbacks leading the pack at an impressive No. 10.

So, what’s fueling Florida’s ranking? Borzello highlights a key question: "How will the Gators respond after an extraordinary season? Their success may hinge on how Todd Golden reinvents their perimeter game."

The departure of star player Walter Clayton Jr. is undoubtedly a significant loss, but he’s not the only one exiting the program. Will Richard, Alijah Martin, and Denzel Aberdeen are also moving on, with Aberdeen’s decision to transfer coming as a surprising twist. On a brighter note, the Gators have bolstered their squad by bringing in Princeton transfer Xaivian Lee, who is expected to make a significant impact, alongside AJ Brown, who had a solid stint at Ohio. However, Golden is still actively seeking additional talent to strengthen the perimeter.

As for the frontcourt, all eyes are on Alex Condon, who is currently navigating the NBA draft process as a borderline first-round pick. Meanwhile, Thomas Haugh is poised to break out in the upcoming season, and Rueben Chinyelu is set to return to bolster the Gators’ inside presence.

It’s worth noting that Chinyelu has received an invitation to participate in the NBA G League Elite Camp leading up to the draft combine, leaving his future in Gainesville a bit uncertain at the moment.

Looking ahead, Florida’s projected starting lineup for the 2025-26 season features:

  • Xaivian Lee (16.9 PPG at Princeton)
  • AJ Brown (13.2 PPG at Ohio)
  • Rueben Chinyelu (6.1 PPG)

In ESPN’s early NCAA top 25 rankings, the Gators will face stiff competition, including teams like:

  • Louisville Cardinals
  • Texas Tech Red Raiders
  • Illinois Fighting Illini
  • Tennessee Volunteers
  • Michigan State Spartans
  • Alabama Crimson Tide
  • North Carolina Tar Heels
